Okinotorishima is located east longitude 136 degrees north latitude 20 degrees in 05 minutes for 25 minutes, and is an island of the southernmost tip about 900km away even from about 1,700km and the Ogawawara Islands 父島 in our country from Tokyo. 沖ノ鳥島は、北緯20度25分、東経136度05分に位置し、東京から約1,700km、小笠原諸島父島からでも約900km離れた我が国最南端の島です。
この島は、我が国の国土面積(約38万km2)を上回る約40万km2の排他的経済水域を有する国土保全上きわめて重要な島ですが、満潮時には高さ、幅とも数m程度の2つの島が海面上に残るのみとなっていました。
